Following the tragic death of 19-year-old student Chibuike Friday in a campus traffic accident, the Imo State Government has leveled unauthorized structures surrounding the Imo State University entrance. The clearing operation, led by Governor’s advisor Nze Chinasa Nwaneri and the Owerri Capital Development Authority, aimed to remove illegal roadside shanties that allegedly served as criminal hubs.
Officials stated that the initiative is designed to restore order, improve road visibility, and eliminate locations used for illicit activities like drug peddling. The action was prompted by a fatal collision occurring just a day earlier, where a speeding Lexus ES 350 hit the victim while he was crossing the street. The driver, Dike Chibuike Micheal, was taken into custody after police protected him from a nearby crowd. A second victim, Bright Ukwuoma, remains under medical care for injuries sustained in the crash.
Police Commissioner Audu Garba Bosso denounced the reckless driving responsible for the death and promised a full legal prosecution of the suspect. Local residents have welcomed the removal of the makeshift buildings, anticipating that the cleanup will enhance safety for pedestrians and commuters alike.
