A five-day sentencing hearing is currently underway at Hull Crown Court regarding the gruesome conditions discovered at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. Robert Bush, 48, previously pleaded guilty to 67 criminal charges, including 30 counts of preventing a lawful burial and 12 instances of charity theft.
Prosecutor Chris Paxton KC detailed the discovery of 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes at the site in March 2024. Evidence presented to the court revealed that many remains were left uncovered in cold storage or lying on stretchers, with some in advanced stages of decomposition. Among the recovered remains was a stillborn baby. The facility was described as unsanitary, with memorial items like cards and stuffed animals discarded on the ground.
The investigation began after temporary workers at the site became suspicious and alerted the police. When apprehended at Heathrow Airport shortly thereafter, Bush admitted to deceiving his clients. Prosecutors highlighted that Bush had been entrusted by numerous families but systematically prioritized his personal finances over his professional responsibilities. Despite managing a business that received over £3 million in payments during the period in question, Bush failed to pay for cremations, allegedly to sustain personal spending habits.
Throughout the hearing, families have provided harrowing impact statements. Loved ones expressed profound psychological trauma, with some sharing the horror of discovering that they had been mourning with the wrong ashes or that their relatives’ remains had been abandoned for months. Victims criticized the lack of industry regulation and demanded accountability for what they described as cold and calculated negligence.
