The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has voiced strong opposition to a recent mandate in Ikwerre Local Government Area that requires residents and political groups to obtain written permission from the Council Chairman before holding any gatherings.
Barrister Chizy Enyi, the party’s publicity secretary, stated that while the party recognizes the ongoing security issues in the region such as kidnappings and violence, the directive issued by Chairman Hon. Charles Wobodo undermines fundamental constitutional rights. The ADC argues that freedom of assembly and political participation are protected by law and cannot be curtailed by local administrative orders.
The party claims this policy is part of a broader trend of intimidation against opposition members, citing previous disruptions to their scheduled meetings. They cautioned that such measures could stifle political participation as the 2027 elections approach.
Instead of restricting civilian rights, the ADC urged local authorities to prioritize tracking down criminals. The party has called on the Rivers State Commissioner of Police and other security stakeholders to intervene, while demanding that Chairman Wobodo immediately retract the directive to ensure a fair environment for all political organizations.
