Peter Obi, the presidential contender for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has formally requested that President Bola Tinubu resign prior to the 2027 national elections. Obi contends that the country is currently suffering from escalating insecurity and economic decline, necessitating a younger, more vigorous leader to oversee national recovery.
During an appearance on Channels Television, Obi asserted that the current administration has proven unable to mitigate the country’s multifaceted crises. He suggested that the President has lost the vitality he once displayed as the Governor of Lagos State, stating that Tinubu appears exhausted and should prioritize a quiet retirement over further governance.
Obi emphasized that the nation is currently moving in an unproductive direction. He explicitly stated that the President lacks the necessary capacity to fulfill his duties effectively. Furthermore, he encouraged the public to prioritize critical issues like food scarcity, widespread poverty, and educational reform over typical political maneuvering, noting that current projections suggest a significant portion of the population is at risk of falling into extreme poverty.
Addressing remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently praised Tinubu’s security initiatives, Obi maintained a polite but firm stance. While he acknowledged the international recognition, he insisted that the government’s current efforts are insufficient given the severity of the ongoing crisis.
