Andrea Pirlo recently voiced his disappointment after learning he is no longer being considered for the Italy national team coaching position. The 47-year-old former midfielder had emerged as a surprise frontrunner to lead the squad’s reconstruction following Italy’s third consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup, especially after Pep Guardiola turned down the role.
Despite his legendary playing career, Pirlo’s coaching resume remains thin. Critics pointed to his limited silverware since starting his management career in 2020, as well as his association with a Russian betting company, as reasons to doubt his candidacy. Currently managing Dubai United in the UAE, Pirlo previously struggled to find success at Juventus, Sampdoria, and Turkish club Karagumruk.
Pirlo took to Instagram to address the situation, stating that he was removed from consideration on Sunday evening. He expressed frustration that a decision meant to be based on athletic merit devolved into a public spectacle involving mischaracterizations of his character. He thanked Paolo Maldini and Leonardo for their support throughout the process. Italian media reports suggest that while those figures supported Pirlo, federation president Giovanni Malago was opposed to the hire from the outset, potentially opening the door for Antonio Conte to return to the post.
