Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced strong criticism regarding the current state of Nigerian politics. During an appearance on the Channels Television show Politics Today, Obi asserted that individuals facing corruption charges are seemingly absolved of their actions as soon as they switch their allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obi argued that the nation’s political landscape is devoid of genuine ideological foundations, noting that personal ambition has superseded principle. He claimed that the current administration is actively undermining opposition groups, specifically citing internal turmoil within the ADC, the NDC, and the Labour Party as evidence of a deliberate strategy to weaken democratic competition. He further accused the government of manipulating the judiciary to achieve these ends.
The former Anambra State governor emphasized that Nigeria requires leadership defined by competence, integrity, and empathy. He promised that, if elected, he would safeguard the autonomy of opposition parties. Additionally, Obi dismissed the notion that gubernatorial endorsements for President Bola Tinubu would secure his success in the 2027 election, stating that state governors do not always accurately represent the desires of their constituents.
