Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has unveiled intentions to shutter the Konduga camp for Internally Displaced Persons as his administration continues its broad resettlement initiative. This decision builds upon the recent shutdown of the Bama camp, which was the largest of its kind outside Maiduguri, along with an impending closure of the Gwoza facility.
During a trip to Konduga, Governor Zulum clarified that the repatriation strategy relies entirely on the consent of the displaced individuals. He emphasized that residents will not be forced to leave their current shelters against their will. The governor noted that official discussions with the community will proceed over the next four months to ensure a dignified transition, citing positive feedback from residents regarding their desire to return home.
While in the region, the governor assessed housing projects in Amarwa and visited the town of Maiwa within the Mafa Local Government Area. The government is currently building homes and essential infrastructure, such as clinics and water systems, to facilitate the return of those displaced. Zulum was joined by a delegation of government officials, including federal lawmaker Engr. Bukar Talba and state assembly member Hon. Bukar Modu.
