Brigadier General Buba Marwa, the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has tasked traditional and community leaders with the responsibility of vetting individuals attempting to purchase rural farmland. This proactive measure aims to stop drug trafficking syndicates from setting up hidden laboratories in isolated regions.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Marwa referenced the May discovery of a N480bn methamphetamine lab in Ogun State’s Abidagba Forest, which was managed by a Nigerian-Mexican partnership. He emphasized that traditional rulers are the primary authorities in local areas and should spearhead efforts to curb drug abuse through community advocacy and local rehabilitation support.
During the 10th Akinale Day and the coronation anniversary of Oba Oluseyi Adeniran in Ewekoro, Ogun State, the NDLEA boss addressed the youth directly. He characterized substance use as a destructive illusion that exacerbates problems rather than providing relief. Marwa urged parents to be vigilant regarding their children’s behavior and to prioritize strong upbringing.
Stating that the nation faces a severe and quiet crisis regarding illicit narcotics, Marwa noted that drug dependency affects all socioeconomic classes. Former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun attended the event to praise the monarch and encourage new chiefs to prioritize selfless public service. In his address, Oba Adediran acknowledged the NDLEA’s dedication to national security and thanked his community for their ongoing support.
