Rwang Tengwom, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth-Moulders Association (BYM), recently announced that assessment data indicates over 130 Plateau communities are currently under Fulani occupation. This statement directly contradicts assertions made by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), which claims no such occupation exists within the state.
During an interview in Jos, Tengwom explained that these affected regions are primarily located in Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Jos South, as well as segments of Bassa, Bokkos, and Mangu local government areas. He described a recurring pattern where armed groups force residents out through violence, creating zones that the original inhabitants can no longer access.
Tengwom dismissed claims that these attacks are mere reprisals for cattle rustling. He argued that incidents attributed to natives are often internal conflicts between herders themselves, yet these events are frequently used to justify raids on local villages. He stated that criminality cannot be excused and highlighted that these aggressive takeovers remain a grave, ongoing concern for the displaced population.
