The Benue State branch of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has expressed deep anxiety regarding a surge in murders and cattle robbery within the Benue South Senatorial District. According to the group, this violence has surpassed the typical farmer-herder tensions and transformed into systemic criminal behavior.
Ibrahim Galma, the secretary for MACBAN, issued a formal statement on Wednesday urging the Benue State Government and local security forces to take immediate action. Galma emphasized that the violence in the region is now driven by criminals using the unstable climate to steal, kill, and force citizens from their homes.
The association highlighted the June 26, 2026, assassination of their state chairman, Ardo Risku Muhammad, and his colleague, Yakubu Isah, in Okudu village as a primary example of the deteriorating security landscape. Similar violence was reported across communities including Otukpo-Nobi, Ogobia, and Efeyi, leading to significant loss of life.
Data provided by MACBAN indicates that from July 21 to July 28, numerous settlements were targeted, resulting in fatalities, stolen livestock, and burned homes in areas such as Olahimu and Ipom. In response, the organization is demanding a comprehensive investigation and the prosecution of all involved parties. They have proposed the creation of a multi-ethnic peace committee involving Idoma, Igede, Agatu, and Fulani representatives to foster stability and prevent further escalation.
