Sean McCann, the younger brother of Madeleine McCann, is set to compete for Scotland at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 21-year-old Loughborough University student will participate in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle events, marking his first appearance at a major championship. His competition begins this Saturday at the Tollcross Swimming Centre.
Reflecting on the opportunity, McCann expressed his enthusiasm about representing Scotland, especially on home soil. He noted that having family in Glasgow and witnessing the 2014 Games as a child makes this achievement particularly meaningful. Although he grew up in England, McCann qualifies for the Scottish team through his father, Gerry.
McCann, who is currently studying chemical engineering, has been involved with the Scottish Swimming program since his teenage years. His recent performances include a third-place finish in the 800m and a fourth-place finish in the 1500m at the British Championships. Having previously represented Scotland at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games and competed for Great Britain in Croatia, he feels ready for the challenge. He currently views himself as an underdog, noting that he feels minimal pressure as he approaches his performance.
The athlete’s background is often noted due to the 2007 disappearance of his older sister, Madeleine, during a family vacation in Portugal, a case that continues to be a high-profile investigation led by the Metropolitan Police.
