The gathering aimed to address the intense fallout from a controversial, now-abandoned scheme to invite private investment into the World Cup. Despite the organization offering an apology for its handling of the proposal, leaders reaffirmed their confidence in Infantino, noting he remains the only representative officially chosen by the 211 member associations.
The abandoned initiative, known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise, sought to generate $4.2 billion by creating a commercial entity to manage marquee tournaments. While the plan promised significant financial windfalls for member associations, it triggered a massive backlash. UEFA harshly criticized the move, even suggesting a potential boycott of the World Cup, while other regional bodies like CONCACAF questioned the current governance under Infantino. Even Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joined the ranks of those publicly expressing a lack of confidence in the president’s leadership.
FIFA acknowledged that the process was flawed and that communication errors occurred after the plan was leaked. A formal review is underway, and leadership has promised to improve internal processes moving forward.
