The loss of the Obidient movement’s moral urgency would transform a disciplined alternative government into a loose coalition of pragmatic local actors.
While Governor Hope Uzodinma claimed all Igbo governors were aligned with President Tinubu’s re-election, Governor Otti quickly disassociated himself from that claim. Yet, at a later event, Otti praised the President extensively. This leaves the public questioning if Otti’s neutrality is a calculated facade. With the election approaching, leaders must provide clear direction. Otti cannot continue to navigate between two political camps; he must choose a side.
The Obidient movement relies on moral clarity. Supporters who feel betrayed by Otti’s overt admiration for Tinubu are noticing that his actions complicate the movement’s mission. While some claim Otti’s proximity to the President is merely pragmatic for Abia State’s development, others view it as political inconsistency. If Otti believes Tinubu is performing well, he should be transparent about that stance rather than engaging in selective support.
Though Otti has maintained his position in the Labour Party, his actions suggest an alliance with the current administration. This behavior risks stripping the opposition of its ability to hold the ruling party accountable. The belief that a state governor must display subservience to the presidency to secure federal cooperation is a harmful narrative that undermines democratic health. Alex Otti’s governance in Abia is noted, but he must now answer for the moral ambiguity of his political alignments.
