Actress Regina Chukwu has alleged that the English-language segment of Nigeria’s movie industry relies on a culture of exchanging sexual favors for roles. During a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, she explained why she ultimately transitioned to the Yoruba-language film sector.
Chukwu recounted her early experiences attending auditions at Winnings Hotel in Surulere, where she saw established stars like Genevieve Nnaji. Despite her efforts, she found the English film industry unwelcoming compared to the Yoruba sector. She asserted that achieving success in the English industry often required engaging in sexual intimacy with various staff members, including those in minor roles.
The actress noted that she felt more at home in the Yoruba movie industry, having been raised among Yoruba speakers throughout her life. While she has gained significant recognition in Lagos and other parts of the South West, she noted that she remains largely unknown in her home state of Enugu, partly due to her focus on the Yoruba film market over the English one.
