The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has guaranteed citizens that their votes will be accurately tallied during the forthcoming elections. This promise was underscored by a call from former Head of State and National Peace Committee (NPC) Chairman, General Abdulsalam Abubakar (rtd), for the public to back the commission as it readies for the 2027 General Election.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, offered this commitment during a Friday, July 24, 2026, visit to General Abubakar in Minna, Niger State. Prof. Amupitan honored the former leader as a foundational figure in Nigeria’s democracy, specifically noting his 1999 transition to civilian governance. He also lauded the Peace Accord initiative for its role in curbing political violence.
Regarding the 2027 schedule, the Chairman confirmed that the Presidential and National Assembly contests are set for January 16, 2027, followed by the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections on February 6, 2027. Despite institutional hurdles, Amupitan stressed that INEC is firmly focused on ensuring that electoral outcomes truly represent the public will.
General Abubakar acknowledged the immense pressure inherent in leading the electoral body. He encouraged citizens and political actors to foster an environment of cooperation and trust to ensure democratic stability. Furthermore, he urged Prof. Amupitan to remain impartial while performing his duties.
During a separate meeting with staff at the Niger State office, Prof. Amupitan emphasized that the integrity of field personnel is vital for public trust. He acknowledged that working conditions for staff have historically been inadequate and pledged that his administration is actively working to improve welfare packages for the organization’s workforce.
