A holidaymaker has recounted his harrowing efforts to save a mother and her daughter after they got into difficulty off the coast of West Mersea in Essex. Craig Bowe, a 42-year-old kitchen fitter from Hertfordshire, was visiting the beach with his family to celebrate his daughter’s 10th birthday when the emergency began on Wednesday evening.
Upon hearing cries for help, Bowe entered the water multiple times to assist those struggling against the tide. He successfully brought 41-year-old Shally Rahman and 15-year-old Samiha Rahman to the shore, where his wife, Carly, and other bystanders attempted to provide CPR. Unfortunately, both individuals later passed away. During his final rescue attempt, Bowe reached a seven-year-old boy stranded about 150 yards out, helping to secure him onto a lifeboat. The young boy, who was visiting from London, remains in critical condition in the hospital.
Bowe dismissed labels of heroism, instead emphasizing the collective effort of everyone on the beach who worked to assist the family. Essex Police are currently conducting an investigation and have asked any witnesses to provide information regarding the incident, which occurred at approximately 17:35 BST.
