Mark van Bommel has signed on as the head coach of the Belgium national team, committing to a deal that lasts until the conclusion of Euro 2028. The 49-year-old former Dutch international is set to step into the position on August 15.
He replaces Rudi Garcia, who left the post following Belgium’s loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals. Van Bommel arrives with recent success at Royal Antwerp, where he secured a league title and both the Belgian Cup and Super Cup during his two seasons there.
Expressing his excitement, Van Bommel stated that he looks forward to leading a squad he views as highly talented. He emphasized his goal of creating a bold and ambitious team capable of challenging elite opponents. Sporting director Vincent Mannaert noted that the coach’s extensive playing and managerial background makes him the ideal choice to help the Red Devils grow.
Assisting Van Bommel in his new duties will be Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens, and Reinier Robbemond. The group’s immediate focus will be the upcoming Nations League matches against France, Italy, and Turkey scheduled for later this year.
