The Nigerian Army has confirmed the emergence of a new terrorist group, named ‘Lukarawas’, operating in the northwestern region of Nigeria.

Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed this development during a briefing with journalists on Thursday, November 8, in Abuja.

Buba explained that the new terrorist group originated from the Republic of Niger following the coup that resulted in the collapse of military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.

He further stated that the terrorists began infiltrating the northern parts of Sokoto and Kebbi States, entering through the Niger Republic and Mali axis, following the coup in Niger.

“The terrorists took advantage of the gaps in cooperation between both countries and exploited difficult terrains to make incursions in remote areas in some North Western states to spread their ideology,” he said.

Buba noted that the group was initially accepted by the local communities, who believed the terrorists meant well for them. He added that, unfortunately, the locals failed to report the group’s movements to the military and security agencies.

He assured that troops are actively locating the terrorists and taking measures to eliminate the threat they pose.
