Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, representing the Udege/Loko Constituency in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has reported a surge in violence within his district, claiming that 32 individuals have been killed over the past three months. Addressing the Assembly, Kana highlighted that these frequent assaults have terrified local residents and devastated the local economy, specifically impacting agricultural production.
The legislator noted that the unrest started on April 3, 2026, in the Odeni Gida Electoral Ward. Beyond the loss of life, he reported that over 200 people are now displaced, with extensive damage caused to homes, vehicles, and food supplies. Affected areas include Angwan Mada, Apura Adagba, Udege Kasa, Akyewa, and Angwan Ogiri. Kana warned of further escalation after additional killings in the Akum Electoral Ward on June 25 and July 9, 2026.
Kana requested that the Assembly condemn the violence and mandate that security forces be deployed to the region. He also sought aid from the state and national emergency management agencies for the displaced victims. In response, Speaker Dr. Danladi Jatau requested that Governor Abdullahi Sule increase police presence in the area and encouraged local leaders to form reconciliation committees. Several other lawmakers supported the motion, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures across the state.
