Activist David Ugolor has called on Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to initiate a lasting solution for the Benin–Sapele–Warri Road. Rather than relying on repeated emergency repairs, Ugolor suggests the governor should collaborate with the Federal Government and the administration in Edo State to secure a full reconstruction of this vital route.
In a recent publication, Ugolor praised the governor for his swift response to the breakdown of the Oghara–Mosogar section of the highway. However, he emphasized that patching the road is not a permanent cure for its deep-seated structural issues. He warned that without a comprehensive rebuild, these temporary fixes will continue to waste public funds as the road inevitably fails again.
The highway serves as a crucial link for the Niger Delta, yet it has been neglected for years despite high-level funding. Ugolor identified poor contract oversight and corruption as the primary reasons for the route’s decline, which has negatively impacted local commerce, agriculture, and public safety. He noted that the poor road conditions have created dangerous gaps that criminals exploit to target stranded travelers.
Beyond reconstruction, the activist is demanding transparency. He wants the Delta State Government to disclose the exact costs, scope, and timeline for the recent repair project to ensure accountability. Looking forward, he urged Governor Oborevwori to spearhead a regional coalition with other Niger Delta leaders to demand that the Federal Government declare a state of emergency on the East-West Road. He believes this is essential to securing the dedicated funding and independent oversight needed to deliver a safe and durable highway for all citizens.
