Professor Sylvester Akhaine of Lagos State University and the Nigerian Guild of Editors recently highlighted the necessity for a transparent Independent National Electoral Commission, professional media, and an engaged electorate to secure credible elections in 2027. These remarks were delivered during the Fourth Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture in Ikeja, an annual event commemorating the legacy of the former Lagos State Governor and veteran journalist.
During his keynote, Professor Akhaine argued that Nigeria’s democratic progress is currently hindered by state capture and a lack of institutional balance. He noted that the media must serve its constitutional duty of holding power to account, while INEC needs increased independence and technological focus to overcome historical trust deficits. He specifically supported recommendations from the Uwais Electoral Reform Panel, suggesting that the appointment of electoral officials should be shielded from executive control.
The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Eze Anaba, emphasized that electoral integrity is the cornerstone of legitimate governance. He urged journalists to combat misinformation and maintain high ethical standards. Attendees, including government officials and academics, also proposed renaming Lagos State University in honor of Lateef Jakande to permanently recognize his dedication to public service.
