A group of 120 affluent Britons, featuring notable figures such as former football star Gary Lineker and producer Brian Eno, has formally requested that Prime Minister Andy Burnham implement higher taxes on the wealthy. This collective, known as Patriotic Millionaires, emphasized in an open letter that they possess the capacity to contribute more to the national coffers. They clarified that their proposal targets those whose earnings stem from existing capital rather than everyday workers.
The organization is advocating for a 2% tax on wealth exceeding £10 million. They argue that such a policy would promote a more equitable society and facilitate a necessary distribution of resources from the elite to regional communities. The letter suggests that untapped capital held by the wealthy represents a significant opportunity for national investment.
While individuals currently have the option to make voluntary donations to the Treasury, this campaign seeks a systemic change. Prime Minister Burnham previously hinted at the potential need for increased tax contributions during a discussion with Lineker prior to his election. The signatories, who also include director Richard Curtis and former Greggs head Ian Gregg, assert that most millionaires support this push for higher taxes and criticize those who prioritize personal wealth over national progress.
