The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially begun nationwide enforcement against alcoholic beverages sold in sachets or PET bottles smaller than 200ml. This action confirms the federal government’s total prohibition of these specific products.
Teams from NAFDAC are currently inspecting markets, transit hubs, bars, and retail shops across all six geopolitical zones to locate and confiscate banned items. Any individual or business caught manufacturing, importing, or selling these goods faces potential legal consequences.
Director-General Prof. Christianah Adeyeye has urged all stakeholders to hand over remaining stock immediately. She warned that ignoring this directive will lead to seizures and regulatory penalties. The initiative aims to curb underage drinking and substance abuse, particularly among Nigerian youth.
This campaign is part of a broader, ongoing effort to remove dangerous alcohol products from the marketplace. NAFDAC clarified that this move does not affect compliant manufacturers but serves to protect vulnerable populations from health risks associated with cheap, small-pack alcohol. The agency is asking the public to assist by reporting any continued sale or distribution of these illegal items.
