The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has released a health advisory regarding potential outbreaks of cholera and other illnesses linked to anticipated flooding. Projections from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Federal Ministry of Environment indicate that heavy rains and subsequent floods are expected between April 13 and 17, 2026.
High-Risk States
The forecast identifies ten states at significant risk, including Adamawa, Enugu, Kaduna, Kogi, Niger, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, and Kwara.
The NCDC highlighted that floodwaters could contaminate water sources, leading to diarrhoeal diseases and malaria. The agency also warned of physical injuries and potential interference with essential medical services. To mitigate these risks, residents are urged to practice proper sanitation, store food securely, and consume only water that has been boiled or chlorinated.
Preventive Measures
- Use insecticide-treated nets to prevent malaria.
- Maintain consistent hand hygiene.
- Avoid direct contact with floodwater.
- Seek medical help immediately if symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea occur.
The NCDC is collaborating with state authorities to enhance disease surveillance and emergency response capabilities. Additionally, the agency has called upon local leaders to increase public awareness and facilitate better access to clean water to protect vulnerable communities.
