5.8-Magnitude Quake Rocks Turkey, Leaves One Dead and Dozens Injured
Tourists and locals were jolted from their sleep in the early hours of Tuesday morning as a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the Aegean holiday hotspot of Rhodes, rattling both sides of the Greece–Turkey border.
According to Turkey’s disaster management agency, the tremor hit the coastal town of Marmaris, a popular Mediterranean destination, shortly after 2:00 a.m. local time. The quake’s epicenter was recorded approximately 29 kilometers north of Rhodes, at a depth of 68 kilometers, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake’s shockwaves rippled across southern Greece, western Turkey, and Aegean coastal areas, sparking panic and chaos as buildings shook violently. One fatality has been confirmed in Turkey — a 14-year-old child in the resort town of Fethiye — Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said. The teenager was taken to hospital but succumbed to their injuries.
Dozens more were hurt in the Turkish province of Mugla, with many sustaining injuries while fleeing buildings in panic. Marmaris Mayor Acar Unlu told local broadcaster NTV that emergency crews had been mobilized to assess potential structural damage.
On the Greek side, travelers shared their early-morning fright online. “Nothing like being woken up on the 5th floor in Rhodes while an earthquake violently shakes the building! Something I can tick off the list,” wrote one tourist on X (formerly Twitter).
While no large-scale destruction has been reported, the event served as a stark reminder of the region’s seismic volatility. Turkey is no stranger to powerful earthquakes. Just last year, in February 2023, twin tremors — including a devastating 7.8-magnitude quake — claimed over 53,000 lives across 11 Turkish provinces and left thousands dead in neighboring Syria.
And only weeks ago, a 6.1-magnitude quake struck off the coast of Crete in Greece, prompting a tsunami advisory and temporary closures of popular tourist sites due to landslides.
As aftershocks continue to ripple through the region, authorities are urging caution and ongoing preparedness, the earth beneath this sun-soaked corner of the Mediterranean, it seems, is never fully at rest.
