Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, the Founder and Board of Trustees Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has declared that the party will not offer automatic presidential tickets for the 2027 elections. In a Lagos statement released Wednesday, Aniebonam explained that all contenders must face a strict vetting process to evaluate their loyalty, ability, and capacity to win votes.
This policy shift stems from the party’s 2023 election performance. According to Aniebonam, the party intends to avoid past errors by ensuring their flag bearer is selected through a rigorous system. The party has already identified three primary candidates and has submitted a temporary placeholder to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) while the vetting concludes.
Aniebonam noted that recent internal conflicts and legal battles involving Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement hindered early preparations. Despite these challenges, which caused some members to leave the party, he remains optimistic. The National Executive Committee is set to meet to finalize convention dates, adjust nomination fees, and review potential litigation against INEC regarding its handling of court orders. Finally, he extended an invitation to former members, highlighting that the party offers inclusive opportunities for women and individuals with disabilities.
