The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has clarified its stance on why it refrained from freezing Ekiti State government bank accounts during the recent gubernatorial election. Wilson Uwujaren, the commission’s Director of Public Affairs, stated on Arise Television that the agency lacked incriminating evidence against Ekiti State officials to justify such measures.
This statement follows the commission’s decision to freeze Osun State government accounts just days before their own governorship election. Uwujaren emphasized that the move in Osun was not unprecedented, pointing to a similar past action in Edo State where the EFCC intercepted the transfer of 12 billion naira to suspicious accounts.
Defending the commission’s integrity, Uwujaren noted that these actions are based on specific intelligence. He maintained that the agency is not unfairly targeting any political entity but is instead performing its regulatory duties based on information that is not available to the general public.
