The internal discord within the Osun State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) escalated recently when a group allied with Kazeem Oyewale seized the union’s state headquarters. This action occurred despite a standing directive suspending all union operations.
Kazeem Oyewale, an APC member widely known as Asiri Eniba, wrested control of the facility in Ijetu, Osogbo, from the incumbent, Wakili Nurudeen, an Accord Party member recognized as Alowonle. The takeover followed a period of intense fighting between opposing factions that prompted widespread disruption and several arrests in the capital.
Local government leaders had previously ordered a total shutdown of NURTW activities and motorcycle union operations due to mounting safety fears. This instability resulted in reports of gunfire in Ilesa and Ile-Ife earlier in the week. Video footage shared online shows Oyewale touring the facility with his associates.
Defending the move, Oyewale claimed the takeover was orderly and resulted from a vote of no confidence against Alowonle by the union membership. Efforts to reach Nurudeen for comment were unsuccessful.
