The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has revealed that 12,895 students will be awarded degrees and diplomas during its 55th Convocation Ceremony, including 168 individuals who earned First Class honours. Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya shared these figures during a press briefing in Enugu, noting that the cohort consists of 10,641 first-degree and diploma recipients alongside 2,944 higher degree graduates, the latter group including 1,390 PhDs.
As part of the celebrations, Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah will deliver the convocation lecture. Furthermore, the university will confer honorary doctorate degrees on First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, High Chief William Agbo, Dr. Kaycee Kelechi Orji, and Dr. William Franklyn Richardson. Additionally, Professors Peter-Jazzy Ezeh and Boniface Obinna Okere are set to be named Professors Emeritus.
Reflecting on his first eleven months of leadership, Professor Ortuanya highlighted infrastructural and academic progress, such as an increase in the MBBS admission quota from 180 to 400 and the introduction of new academic programs like Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence. The university is also rehabilitating major campus facilities, including the historic Zik’s Flats and several student hostels, while expanding international research collaborations across countries like Sweden and China.
