Erik ten Hag Fired as Manchester United Manager
Dutch tactician Erik ten Hag has been dismissed as Manchester United manager.
He was informed of his sacking on Monday morning, October 28, by club executives including chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox. Ten Hag leaves Old Trafford after two and a half years, with his final match being a Premier League defeat to West Ham United on Sunday.
This loss left the club in 14th place in the table, seven points away from Champions League qualification, with only three league wins out of nine games and just four victories in 14 across all competitions.
The club has appointed former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was recruited in the offseason to assist Ten Hag, to take charge on an interim basis while the rest of the management staff remains in their positions for the time being.
A statement on Manchester United’s social media confirmed the news: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.”
“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Ten Hag was retained as Manchester United manager during the summer after an end-of-season review, despite the club finishing eighth in the Premier League—its lowest position since 1990. This came on the heels of a FA Cup final victory over rivals Manchester City.
In early July, United activated a one-year extension option in the 54-year-old’s contract. His original deal, signed upon his appointment in 2022, was set to expire in 2025.
