The Osun State Police Command has verified that fighting erupted between opposing factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) during demonstrations on Monday. The conflict reportedly began when one group claimed they were barred from a motor park by the ruling faction.
This disturbance was connected to recent violent incidents in Osogbo, where an attack last Wednesday left two adults and one toddler dead. Some individuals associated with these victims have pointed fingers at the NURTW state chairman, Nurudeen Alowonle, though these claims remain unproven. Earlier that Monday, union members protested at various parks across the state to express their lack of confidence in Alowonle’s leadership.
Abiodun Ojelabi, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that authorities intervened after receiving reports of the unrest, which had hindered local commerce. Officers used limited force to disperse the crowds and bring the situation under control. Security personnel are now stationed at transit hubs to prevent further fighting.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan has called for calm, urging stakeholders to pursue peaceful dispute resolution rather than violence. Law enforcement officials have promised an objective investigation and warned that anyone responsible for criminal actions will be prosecuted. Residents are encouraged to provide helpful information to the police and to avoid circulating unverified reports that could incite public panic.
