A tragic boating accident in the Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State has left approximately 40 women and children missing and presumed dead. The Jigawa State Police Command acknowledged the disaster on Monday, noting that search efforts are currently in progress.
While officials have managed to retrieve one body, the search continues for the remaining passengers. Muhammad Sanusi, the Director of Planning at the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), reported that the victims were primarily agricultural workers traveling by canoe when the vessel capsized. While the specific cause of the incident remains unknown, local divers and community volunteers are assisting emergency teams in the search.
Authorities are still attempting to verify the total number of individuals who were on the boat. This incident highlights the ongoing danger of water transport in northern Nigeria, where rural areas frequently rely on boats despite persistent issues with overloading, aging vessels, and a lack of safety gear like life jackets.
