B&M Retail Ltd must pay £2 million after failing to uphold food safety standards at three of its Birmingham branches. Birmingham City Council took legal action against the company following a series of environmental health inspections conducted between November 2024 and October 2025.
Investigations revealed mouse infestations at several locations, including St Andrew’s Retail Park, where inspectors discovered gnawed merchandise and rodent droppings. Similar issues were documented at the Priory Square Shopping Centre and The Fort Shopping Park. The council initiated these site visits after receiving various complaints, including a shopper who reported witnessing a mouse inside the Priory Square location.
During a hearing on 13 July at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, the retailer admitted to the charges. Beyond the primary fine, the court ordered B&M Retail Limited to contribute £18,104 toward prosecution expenses and a £2,000 victim surcharge. The company has been instructed to settle these payments within a 28-day window.
