Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former Kano State governor and vice-presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced the existence of a formal, written agreement regarding the 2027 presidential election. During an appearance on Channels Television, Kwankwaso stated that he and presidential candidate Peter Obi have committed to a single four-year term.
The agreement stipulates that after Obi completes a four-year tenure from 2027 to 2031, power will rotate back to the North. Kwankwaso emphasized that this arrangement is not merely a verbal understanding; it is documented both as a bilateral deal between him and Obi and as a separate agreement with the NDC party leadership.
Regarding his trust in the process, the former governor noted that he has no reason to doubt Obi’s commitment to the document, describing both parties as gentlemen. Kwankwaso explained that he accepted the vice-presidential position because the current political climate favors a temporary southern presidency, which he hopes will foster national unity. While opposition parties have expressed skepticism about the likelihood of such a promise being kept, Obi has previously stated publicly that he is committed to serving only four years to ensure stability.
