Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially become the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. His appointment occurred during the 69th Ordinary Session of the regional organization, which took place in Sierra Leone.
Faye succeeds Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio. President Bio had stepped into the role in June 2025 after President Bola Tinubu finished his term. The transition from Tinubu to Bio had previously taken place at the 67th Ordinary Session in Abuja.
This transition arrives during a difficult period for the bloc. ECOWAS faces significant obstacles including regional instability, threats to democratic governance, and diplomatic fractures with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, all of which recently exited the organization.
In his new capacity, President Faye is tasked with enhancing regional collaboration and finding ways to re-engage the departed nations to bolster West African security. At 46 years old, Faye represents a younger leadership cohort. Observers anticipate that he will emphasize democratic accountability, institutional overhaul, and increased involvement for young people in regional policy.
