Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, has challenged Nigerian authorities to prioritize economic strategies that directly enhance the standard of living for the general population. During a gathering in Kano this past Thursday, the monarch emphasized that the success of any government initiative must be measured solely by its tangible benefits to the citizens.
Speaking on his behalf, Professor Abubakar Aliyu Sanusi noted that the discourse is particularly relevant given Nigeria’s ongoing economic and political difficulties. The Emir asserted that any policy failing to uplift the welfare of the people is fundamentally flawed. He encouraged leaders to tackle critical issues such as corruption, widespread insecurity, crumbling infrastructure, and extreme poverty.
Furthermore, the Emir urged political leaders to abandon self-interest in favor of public service. He argued that the debate over power rotation should be secondary to the necessity of electing competent and empathetic individuals to office. Reflecting on Nigeria’s history since independence, the monarch called for national unity, religious tolerance, and collective responsibility to overcome lingering instability and ethnic tensions.
