NANS cautions Federal University, Wukari against expelling students over unpaid tuition

The National Association of Nigerian Students has warned Federal University, Wukari to stop penalizing students over delayed tuition payments as they await disbursements from the federal loan scheme.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a stern warning to the administration of Federal University, Wukari in Taraba State. The organization objects to the school’s policy of barring students from academic registration or removing them from campus due to unpaid fees. NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, argued that the university should show restraint while students await tuition support from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund).

NANS expressed significant dissatisfaction with the university’s directive, which mandates that students unable to pay fees must defer their semester or risk losing their academic standing. The association characterizes this stance as insensitive and a direct contradiction to the goal of inclusive education. They noted that over 5,000 students are currently affected by this directive.

The association further argued that these actions undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goal of making higher education accessible through the NELFund initiative. NANS insisted that since many students have already applied for this funding, the university should wait for the disbursements rather than penalizing the learners. The student body explicitly threatened to halt all examinations at the institution unless the management reverses its policy and permits the affected students to register and sit for their tests. NANS pledged to move its national leadership to the campus to continue their resistance if the university fails to comply.
