The Youth and Students Advocates for Development Initiative (YSAD) is pushing for Minister of Works Senator David Umahi to be suspended. This request comes as officials investigate the death of Mary Habila, who passed away on June 27, 2026, at a property linked to the minister in Uburu, Ebonyi State.
Obinna Nwagbara, the executive director of YSAD, stated that the minister should step aside to ensure the investigation remains unbiased. The organization voiced concerns about reports suggesting the family wished to bypass an autopsy. YSAD maintains that a medical examination is essential for justice, regardless of external influence.
The group praised the Ebonyi State Police Command for prioritizing the autopsy and urged them to remain firm under pressure. Additionally, they have called on the Inspector-General of Police to oversee the matter personally. YSAD also requested that President Bola Tinubu mandate Umahi’s temporary suspension to maintain public trust in the inquiry. Although Umahi has previously requested a forensic autopsy himself, the group insists that formal removal from his post is necessary to prevent any conflict of interest during the process.
