Emergency crews have spent the night fighting a large-scale wildfire that has consumed over two miles of terrain in the Cairngorms National Park. The fire began on Wednesday near Ryvoan Bothy, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents, campers, and visitors at ski facilities.
Deputy assistant chief officer Ian McMeekin confirmed that four fire appliances remain at the scene. Officials are currently assessing the situation to determine if additional resources are required to manage the ongoing blaze. While the exact cause remains unknown, authorities have cautioned the public to act responsibly during the ongoing heatwave.
As a safety measure, police have closed the C7 road, commonly known as the Ski Road. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported no injuries, though local wildlife, including the rare capercaillie, may be threatened. RSPB Scotland, along with neighboring estates, has been assisting with specialized firefighting equipment, though private helicopter support was unavailable due to fires in England.
A high-risk wildfire warning remains in effect for the central Highlands and parts of southern and eastern Scotland until next Monday. Fire officials urge the public to refrain from using disposable barbecues and to exercise extreme caution in the countryside to prevent further incidents.
