The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has cautioned all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) that conducting staffing exercises, such as recruitment or promotions, without oversight will result in penalties. This directive was announced during a meeting in Abuja between the FCC Committee on Works, Transport and Aviation and the leadership of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
Hon. Peter Eze, who chairs the committee and represents Enugu State, stated that the Commission is adopting a proactive stance to ensure adherence to the Federal Character Principle. The agency intends to move beyond administrative formalities and take a strategic role in monitoring personnel activities across government bodies. Any organization bypassing the Commission in these processes will face repercussions.
Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the NRC, welcomed the oversight, noting that the corporation remains dedicated to national integration and constitutional compliance. He described the meeting as a productive exchange that emphasizes the necessity of inter-agency cooperation.
FCC Executive Chairman, Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, clarified that the commission prefers a collaborative relationship over a punitive one. However, she emphasized that deliberate non-compliance will not be tolerated. To facilitate better cooperation, the FCC has reformed its internal procedures, now offering same-day approval for complete applications to enhance operational efficiency.
