Local Father Identified Following Fatal Rescue Attempt at Seaton Carew

A father named as Wayne Taylor has died after helping rescue two children from the sea at Seaton Carew beach in Hartlepool.

A father who tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue two children from the sea at Seaton Carew beach has been identified as Wayne Taylor. Mr. Taylor and another man were recovered from the water by the RNLI at approximately 15:45 BST on Sunday, but both were declared deceased shortly thereafter.

The two children involved were transported to a medical facility as a precautionary measure and are reported to be safe. Cleveland Police have stated that formal identification processes are ongoing, and they continue to assist the coroner with the investigation.

Jonathan Brash, the Labour MP for Hartlepool, characterized the incident as an agonizing loss for the community. In response, Graham Harrison, leader of the Hartlepool Borough Council, has requested a comprehensive safety review of the coastline. Currently, lifeguards are only present at the beach during summer school holidays, which have not yet commenced. Local councillor Sue Little and residents are now calling for an extension of these services from May through September, with a petition gaining over 1,600 signatures.

Among those who responded to the scene was Davey Short, who managed to pull one of the children to safety. Mr. Short, who was present at the beach during the event, expressed his distress, noting that as a father himself, he felt compelled to assist despite the danger.
