This diplomatic trip, the Prime Minister’s first abroad since taking office, occurs amid heightened military tensions between Tehran and Washington. Iraq often functions as a proxy arena for these two nations, forcing Iraqi leaders to navigate a complex balancing act. Beyond meeting with President Trump, al-Zaidi plans to consult with various U.S. officials and representatives from the energy sector.
Al-Zaidi, a businessman supported by the U.S. during his rise to power, has committed to strengthening Iraq’s economy and neutralizing pro-Iran militias that have frequently attacked American installations. His administration has set a September 30 deadline for these armed groups to disarm, a timeline that aligns with the conclusion of the U.S.-led anti-jihadist coalition’s mandate.
Despite this shift toward a more U.S.-aligned economic agenda, observers suggest Iraq remains committed to its long-standing regional partnerships. Some militia factions have publicly opposed the Prime Minister’s trip, cautioning against increased American economic involvement. Nonetheless, al-Zaidi intends to secure new infrastructure deals with U.S. corporations, including an agreement to exchange oil for assistance in improving Iraq’s electricity sector.
