Government Allocates £250 Million to Enhance Jewish Community Security

The government is deploying £251 million to enhance police presence and security infrastructure for Jewish communities across England following a surge in antisemitic attacks.

The British government has announced a £251 million funding package aimed at bolstering safety for Jewish communities across England amid rising antisemitic incidents. This initiative is designed to increase police visibility and provide long-term protection, potentially serving as a framework for addressing hate crimes against other demographics.

The Metropolitan Police are slated to receive £86 million, facilitating the recruitment of approximately 300 new officers. These personnel will focus on patrolling Jewish neighborhoods, educational institutions, synagogues, and community centers. Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes noted that this capital will allow for the expansion of Community Protection Teams and the establishment of a specialized hub in Golders Green.

Additional resources have been earmarked for various regions. Greater Manchester Police will secure £22 million to maintain heightened security measures following the tragic deaths of Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz last year. Furthermore, £43 million will be distributed among seven other police forces—including West Yorkshire, Northumbria, and the Thames Valley—to address local needs. An additional £41 million will support national coordination, including comprehensive antisemitism training, while £59 million is dedicated to counter-terrorism efforts.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that this investment represents a fundamental shift in ensuring Jewish citizens can practice their faith without apprehension. Mark Gardner of the Community Security Trust welcomed the commitment, noting the necessity of this support. Beyond immediate policing, the government has confirmed £32.4 million for physical security infrastructure at Jewish sites for the 2026-27 period, ensuring a robust approach to community safety.
