On the evening of Saturday, July 11, 2026, an elderly woman named Mrs. Afiong Peters died after suffering a medical emergency while riding a commercial bus in Calabar. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. as the bus traveled from Watt Roundabout toward the Edgerly–Mbukpa–Afukam area.
According to the bus driver, Mr. John Okon John, the situation unfolded when the vehicle stopped on Edgerly Road to allow a passenger to exit. As Mrs. Peters stepped out to clear the path, she collapsed to the ground and became unresponsive. Fellow passengers quickly moved her back into the vehicle and transported her to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors later declared her dead.
