Igbo Leaders of Thought caution against eroding opposition, call on judiciary to protect democracy

The Igbo Leaders of Thought warned that the marginalization of opposition parties poses a significant threat to Nigerian democracy and urged the judiciary to remain an impartial defender of constitutional principles ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT), a coalition of intellectuals and traditional leaders from Nigeria’s South-East, have voiced apprehension regarding the perceived erosion of political opposition ahead of the 2027 polls. In a document issued by President Prof. Elochukwu Amucheazi and Secretary Prof. Jerry Chukwuokolo, the group emphasized that a robust opposition is vital for the nation’s democratic health.

The organization highlighted risks to the upcoming elections, noting concerns raised by Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi regarding his personal safety and professional interests. They also pointed to controversies surrounding Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo’s comments on Obi and reports of gunfire during an earlier political event in the state. According to the ILT, marginalizing opposition groups threatens national stability.

The statement argued that modern Nigerian democracy resulted from prolonged resistance to military rule, necessitating a healthy environment for dissenting voices. The leaders warned that the potential misuse of state entities—such as security agencies, the judiciary, and the electoral commission—could inadvertently move the country toward a one-party system. Drawing parallels to past political unrest in the First and Second Republics, as well as the 2011 election violence, the ILT urged leaders to avoid repeating historical mistakes.

Addressing the judiciary, the group critiqued specific court rulings affecting the NDC, urging judges to strictly uphold constitutional standards. While they supported the NDC’s appeal of a recent Federal High Court decision in Lokoja, they urged all parties to utilize legal avenues for grievance. Finally, the ILT appealed to global partners, including the European Union and the United States, to monitor the 2027 election cycle to ensure transparency and trust in the process.
