The Nigeria Catholic Diocesan Priests Association (NCDPA) in the Makurdi Diocese has formally voiced its opposition to the federal government’s plan to test the National Ranching Policy within Benue State. Led by Chairman Revd. Fr. Joseph Terfa Beba, the group characterized the initiative as a risk to the region’s ancestral territory and criticized the lack of inclusion of the Benue State government in the planning stages.
Highlighting the ongoing challenges of violence and displacement within the state, the association warned that this policy could facilitate land seizure and further unsettle indigenous populations. The priests emphasized that any agricultural reform must involve clear communication with local authorities, traditional leaders, and the citizens directly impacted. Before considering any ranching frameworks, the association insists that priority must be given to the safe return of displaced residents to their homes.
Furthermore, the NCDPA argued that commercial ranching is ill-suited for Benue, which relies primarily on small-scale farming. Supporting the stance of Bishop Wilfred Chikpa Anagbe, the association declared that Benue land is not available for purchase or political maneuvering. They urged federal authorities to uphold the constitutional rights of the local populace and prioritize stakeholder engagement over forced policy implementation.
