Peter Obi dismisses Dave Umahi’s debate challenge

Peter Obi has rejected a debate invitation from Minister of Works Dave Umahi, stating that the minister must first become a formal presidential candidate to qualify for such a discussion.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, recently criticized Minister of Works Dave Umahi regarding a proposed debate. During a discussion with Chude Jideonwo, the former governor of Anambra state argued that Umahi needs to secure a presidential nomination before calling for such a contest.

Obi addressed the challenge after his earlier remarks about the poor condition of Nigerian roads prompted government action, asserting that the effectiveness of his critique was already self-evident. He drew a parallel to professional sports, suggesting that a team excluded from the FIFA World Cup should not demand a match against a qualified participant.

The candidate emphasized that debates at this level are intended for individuals actively running for the presidency. He noted that there are established protocols for these events, similar to the qualification stages in soccer. This retort followed comments from Umahi, who had publicly stated that Obi does not pose a significant political challenge to President Bola Tinubu or the All Progressives Congress.
