A coalition of 501 European lawmakers has officially called on the Nigerian administration to aggressively address regional insecurity, focusing heavily on the Middle Belt. This resolution stems from rising alarm regarding frequent assaults on Christian populations.
The motion passed with strong bipartisan support, featuring 501 votes in favor, one against, and 86 abstentions. The parliament highlighted the deteriorating safety in Plateau State, specifically referencing the June 22 raid in Kawel village. During this incident in the Bokkos Local Government Area, armed attackers killed over 20 people, including a local pastor.
Lawmakers emphasized the urgent need to confront militant organizations such as Boko Haram and ISWAP. They further demanded impartial investigations into these crimes to dismantle the prevailing culture of impunity. The resolution encourages the Federal Government to enhance civilian protection, upgrade warning systems, and prioritize conflict mitigation.
Slovak representative Miriam Lexmann characterized the Kawel massacre as a grim illustration of the danger Christians face within the nation. She stated that Nigeria is currently among the most hazardous countries for individuals of the Christian faith, noting that such tragedies are occurring with alarming frequency.
