Family of Slain Oyo Educator Reflects on Captivity Rescue

Relatives of a murdered Oyo teacher express mixed grief as 44 other hostages are finally released after nearly two months in captivity.

Relatives of Michael Oyedokun are processing a wave of complex emotions following the release of students and staff kidnapped during the May 15 raid in Oyo State. Oyedokun, a teacher at Community High School in Ahoro-Esiele, Oriire, was taken by gunmen and tragically murdered while held in captivity.

After 56 days of detention, 44 other victims were liberated on Friday through a joint mission by the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services, and the police. Oluwabukolami, identifying herself as Oyedokun’s niece, expressed joy for the families of the survivors on social media while noting the profound void left by her uncle’s death.

She stated that while the return of the other victims is a cause for celebration, her family remains in mourning. She emphasized that their household will forever be incomplete due to his absence. The initial attack targeted several institutions, including Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota and the Community Grammar School in Esiele, leaving a community grappling with the aftermath.
