Kogi Police launch probe into murder of Catholic priest

Kogi State police have opened an investigation into the death of Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi, whose body was discovered in the Ajaokuta Local Government Area.

Law enforcement authorities in Kogi State have started an inquiry into the death of Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi. His remains were found on July 29 within the Ajaokuta Local Government Area.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the development in a statement released in Lokoja. She explained that officers arrived at the location immediately after the report was filed. The priest, who served at St. Paul Parish in Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu, was pronounced dead by a physician upon arrival at the hospital. The body was moved to a mortuary for an autopsy.

Commissioner of Police Naziru Kankarofi has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to handle the case. This move is intended to ensure a meticulous search for the truth, identify those involved, and secure convictions. Saliu urged the community to stay composed and avoid spreading rumors that could interfere with police work. The department remains dedicated to resolving the case and providing updates as they become available.
